San Diego International Airport (SAN), also known as Lindbergh Field, is one of the busiest single-runway airports in the world. Located just 5 km (3 miles) from downtown San Diego, the airport is known for its efficiency, compact layout and easy passenger navigation.
The airport has evolved significantly since its origins in 1928, when it was first established as a municipal airfield. Over the decades, SAN has expanded into a modern airport while maintaining a traveler-friendly design with two main terminals serving millions of passengers each year.
Due to its compact design, moving between terminals is quick and easy compared to larger U.S. airports.
Terminal Overview
San Diego Airport currently operates with two main terminals:
- Terminal 1: Primarily domestic flights and low-cost carriers
- Terminal 2: Domestic and international flights, main hub terminal
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the older of the two terminals and mainly serves domestic airlines such as Southwest Airlines. It is currently undergoing redevelopment to improve passenger experience and capacity.
The terminal features a simple layout with check-in counters, security screening and boarding gates all located within a compact space.

Terminal 1 can get crowded during peak hours due to ongoing renovations — arrive early to avoid delays.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 is the main and most modern terminal at SAN, handling both domestic and international flights. It is divided into two areas: Terminal 2 East and Terminal 2 West.
This terminal offers a wide range of services, including premium lounges, extensive dining options and shopping areas.

Terminal 2 offers the best dining and shopping options — ideal if you have extra time before your flight.
